Più di duemila anni di civiltà, svoltasi perlopiù lontano dagli sguardi e dalla “contaminazione” occidentali, fra il IV secolo a.C. e l’età moderna, hanno plasmato una cultura artistica complessa e affascinante. Vasi in ceramica, utensili metallici, sculture e opere pittoriche, grandi templi e monasteri; la presa del potere da parte dei samurai, con la conseguente enfasi sui temi della guerra e della forza; l’arte della calligrafia e quella della pittura a inchiostro su carta; fino alla fioritura di Ukyo-e, alla rivelazione reciproca fra Oriente e Occidente nell’Ottocento quando tutto ciò che era giapponese divenne simbolo e modello di gusto per impressionisti e avanguardie.
